I’m engaged! How do I start planning a Chicago wedding?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Congratulations on your engagement!

First of all, enjoy being engaged. Call your family and share with them the great news. Second, start thinking of a wedding date or at least try to narrow down it to a month or season. Third, talk with your fiance and set a realistic budget that you are both comfortable as a wedding is an investment on (probably) the biggest event you will host. Fourth, start creating a guest list and know what is the approximate amount of guests you are expecting to host at the wedding. Once these things are in place, the fun begins and you can start looking at a location for the ceremony and a venue for the reception.

Have fun planning your Chicago wedding and enjoy your engagement!

A Winter Wedding at a not so Winter Venue

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

A year ago we did a wedding at one of Chicago’s little gems of a venue…the Crystal Gardens in Navy Pier. It’s the perfect place for the couple who wants the outdoor feel and the peace of mind that if it rains, plan B won’t have to be put into place. There is an amazing view of the Chicago skyline facing north and south, you can hold the ceremony outdoors or have it indoors as my clients did. Phil Stephani is the exclusive caterer and they do an excellent job every single time. And as a plus if you get married during the summer months you get to enjoy the fireworks at your wedding. It just can’t get any better.

Lessons Learned from 2009 Brides for 2010 Brides

Friday, December 18th, 2009

As a wedding planner in Chicago I get to see lots of things behind the scenes. On some occasions I have so many stories from just one wedding I could write a book. So it’s that time of the year when past brides get to give future brides (hello 2010 brides!) a few pointers on the school of wedding planning hard knocks.

A. Repeat with with me ” My Wedding” Plan the wedding that you want, not what your mother wants, not what your mother-in-law wants, not the wedding your BFF wanted even though she eloped. Break the vicious cycle, tell your Mom, BFF or MIL they had their chance and now it’s your turn. Plan the wedding that you want…so once again repeat with me ” My Wedding”.

B. If the venue / ballroom you chose for your reception only holds 200 guests don’t invite 300 guests and pray (yes I say pray because hope has gone out the window at this point) you will only have 200. Extend an invitation to the amount of guests that will fit comfortably in the space. Your guests will be happy they have enough personal real estate to enjoy and your caterer will perform flawlessly.

C. When your planner tells you to stay away from a vendor. Stay far away from the vendor!

D. Please get the seamstress to fit your wedding gown correctly. A fitted gown means fitted…a little snug which will let the fabric stretch as you move in it through out the day. A fitted gown means you will not spend the entire evening pulling, tugging or adjusting it.

E. Don’t sweat the small stuff or drown in a glass of water. That’s why you hired the planner, let them worry about it. Enjoy your wedding day. It will go by in the blink of an eye.

Love this Bouquet!

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

It’s so cold in Chicago that I had to look thru pictures of past weddings to warm up. I fell in love with this bridal bouquet created by Tina & Dollie. It was for a bride who got married outdoors at the Cancer Survivor’s Garden on the last official day of summer. The colors are bright and fresh it just reminds me of summer.
